The Flag and Its History

There are 3 different sections on the flag. The right and left sides are sky blue. These represent the Caribbean and Atlantic seas. The  Middle is white and represents peace. The middle contains a seal with two branches of plants and red berries on the stick. Two guns are crossing each other and two swords are crossed in between the guns. The guns represent how willing República de Guatemala is to defend themselves, and the swords represent their honor. There is an Unrolled scroll over the middle of guns that says Libertad 15 de Septiembre de 1821. This date was when Guatemala originally declared independence from Spain (like the Fourth of July). A Green bird with a tail that stretches down to where branches meet is sitting on the scroll. The bird has a red chest and its eyes are black. This bird is a Quetzal which is Guatemala’s national bird.
